Five free practice questions on fire alarm and communication systems: block E of the Red Seal 309A Electrician exam, about 10 of its 100 questions. They are in the exam's format: four options, one correct answer. Answer each one before opening the explanation. No account, no email.
01The questions
-
Occupants of an office complain that the fire alarm signal cannot be heard clearly at their desks. How does the electrician verify whether the signalling meets the requirement?
- Ask several occupants whether they can hear it.
- Measure it with an SPL meter against the code level.
- Turn up the panel's output volume.
- Add strobes so the alarm is visible instead.
Show the answer
B. Correct. Audibility requirements are stated as a minimum sound level above the ambient noise in the space (with a higher margin for sleeping areas). An SPL meter reading during a test, compared with the ambient reading, shows whether more or louder signalling devices are needed. The RSOS lists SPL meters among fire alarm test equipment.
Why not the others
A. Opinion does not establish compliance; the requirement is a measured level.
C. Conventional signalling circuits have no volume control; coverage is set by device count and placement.
D. Visual signals supplement audible signals but do not replace the audibility requirement.
-
A spring-return damper actuator is being installed on an outdoor-air damper of an air handler in a cold climate. Which fail position is specified, and why?
- Fail closed, so a failure cannot let freezing air reach the coils.
- Either, since the freeze stat protects the coil.
- Fail open, to keep fresh air flowing during a failure.
- Fail in place, since the last position is always best.
Show the answer
A. Correct. If control power is lost while the fan is off, an open outdoor-air damper admits freezing air across the heating and cooling coils; spring-return actuators are chosen so the damper drives closed on power loss. Exhaust and relief dampers are often the reverse. The RSOS lists damper motors, valves and actuators among building control components.
Why not the others
B. The freeze stat is a backup; the damper's fail position is the first line of protection.
C. Fresh air without heating in winter freezes the coils; fail-open is the dangerous choice for outdoor-air dampers in cold climates.
D. A non-spring-return actuator holds position, which may be open in a failure.
-
An intercom system operates a DC electric door strike from its Class 2 power supply. What is installed across the strike's coil, and why?
- A fuse to protect the strike from overcurrent.
- A diode or varistor to suppress the coil's inductive kick.
- A capacitor to make the strike operate faster.
- Nothing; Class 2 circuits cannot produce harmful spikes.
Show the answer
B. Correct. When current through the strike coil is interrupted, the collapsing field produces a high-voltage spike that arcs across the controlling relay contacts and can damage the intercom's driver. A diode across a DC coil (cathode to positive) clamps it; a varistor is used for AC strikes. The RSOS lists door release strikes and power supplies among intercom components.
Why not the others
A. Overcurrent protection is at the supply; the component across the coil is for voltage suppression.
C. A capacitor across the coil slows release and does not suppress the spike.
D. The power limitation does not prevent inductive spikes, which come from the coil, not the supply.
-
An electromagnetic lock is being installed on an exit door as part of an access-control system. What must the installation provide?
- Fail-safe release on power loss and fire alarm, with free egress.
- Fail-secure operation so the door stays locked during a power failure.
- A keyed release on the inside for authorized staff.
- Connection to the security panel only, with no fire alarm interface.
Show the answer
A. Correct. Building and fire codes require that a locked exit door still permit egress: maglocks are inherently fail-safe (no power, no lock) and must be interconnected with the fire alarm to release on alarm, with a request-to-exit device (and often a timed manual release) so people can leave. The RSOS lists electronic locks and automatic doors among security components and associated systems.
Why not the others
B. A fail-secure exit door traps occupants during an outage or fire; it is prohibited on required exits.
C. Egress cannot depend on a key; the door must release without special knowledge or tools.
D. Fire alarm release of exit locks is a code requirement.

Several building automation controllers communicate over a BACnet MS/TP segment. How is the segment wired?
- As a star from a central hub, like Ethernet.
- A terminated RS-485 daisy chain with unique device addresses.
- With each controller on its own pair back to the server.
- Using the building's power wiring as the data path.
Show the answer
B. Correct. MS/TP runs over RS-485, which requires a linear bus with end-of-line termination and bias, short stubs, and a unique MAC address on each controller. Star wiring or duplicate addresses cause intermittent communication. BACnet is ANSI/ASHRAE 135, listed in the RSOS among building control standards, and network cabling among BAS components.
Why not the others
A. Star topology is for Ethernet (BACnet/IP); MS/TP is a bus.
C. MS/TP shares one pair among all controllers on the segment.
D. Power-line communication is not how MS/TP is implemented.

| Question | Answer | Sub-task |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | B | Performs servicing and maintenance of fire alarm systems |

03What block E covers
This block covers low-voltage signalling and communication systems. It includes fire alarm panels, detectors and circuit supervision, security systems, access control and surveillance cameras, voice, data and video cabling, fibre and CATV, public address and intercom, nurse call, and building automation systems with BACnet controllers, sensors, damper actuators and PoE devices.
The Red Seal Occupational Standard names this block “Installs, services and maintains signalling and communication systems”. It carries 10% of the exam, about 10 of the 100 questions, split across three tasks. The share column is each task's weight within the block, as the standard publishes it.
| Task and its sub-tasks | Share of block |
|---|---|
| Installs, services and maintains signalling systems Installs fire alarm systems; Performs servicing and maintenance of fire alarm systems; Installs security and surveillance systems; Performs servicing and maintenance of security and surveillance systems | 44% |
| Installs, services and maintains communication systems Installs voice/data/video (VDV) and community antenna television (CATV) systems; Installs public address (PA) and intercom systems; Installs nurse call systems; Performs servicing and maintenance of communication systems | 26% |
| Installs, services and maintains integrated control systems Installs building automation systems; Installs building control systems; Performs servicing and maintenance of integrated control systems | 30% |
04What the questions turn on
End-of-line resistor placement
On a Class B initiating circuit the end-of-line resistor goes at the electrically last device, so an open anywhere removes it and the panel shows trouble. With the zone lifted, an open reading means a break before the resistor.
Fail-safe interconnections
Magnetic door holders and maglocks release when power is lost or the fire alarm operates. Fan shutdown on alarm uses a fire alarm relay contact wired directly into the fan control, so it does not depend on the building automation network.
Structured cabling limits
A copper channel is limited to 100 m, with the permanent link held to 90 m. Untwist at a Category 6 termination stays within 13 mm, and excess untwist shows up as a near-end crosstalk failure at that end.
Wiring an MS/TP segment
BACnet MS/TP runs on RS-485, which needs a linear daisy chain with termination and bias at the ends, short stubs and a unique address on each controller. Star wiring or duplicate addresses cause intermittent communication.
