01The questions
-
When installing a spring nut in a length of strut channel to fasten a conduit strap, how is it correctly positioned?
- Without the spring, which is only for overhead installation.
- Grooves parallel to the channel so the nut can slide to the exact position while tightening.
- Spring toward the inside of the channel, nut rotated a quarter turn so its grooves lock into the inturned lips.
- Spring facing out of the channel so the nut can be pressed in from the front.
Show the answer
C. Correct. The spring holds the nut up against the channel lips while the bolt is started, and the serrated grooves must engage the lips for the connection to hold. If the nut is not turned so the grooves seat, the strap can slide under load.
Why not the others
A. The spring holds the nut in place in any orientation during assembly; removing it makes the nut hard to align and does not change how it locks.
B. Parallel grooves never lock. The nut is slid to position, then turned a quarter turn so the grooves cross and grip the lips before the bolt is tightened.
D. With the spring outward the nut sits loose in the channel and the grooves cannot engage the lips; the bolt will not draw the nut up properly.
-
A feeder breaker has been opened, locked and tagged. Before touching the feeder conductors at the far end, what verification is required?
- Prove the tester live, test every conductor to each other and to ground, prove it again.
- Use a non-contact voltage pen along the cable jacket.
- Test one phase to ground; if it reads zero the others are dead too.
- Confirm the breaker handle is in the OFF position and the tag is signed.
Show the answer
A. Correct. The live-dead-live check confirms the tester works before and after the absence-of-voltage test. Every conductor is checked to every other and to ground because a single open phase or a backfeed can leave part of the circuit live. Only then is a zero-energy state established.
Why not the others
B. Non-contact pens are indicators, not absence-of-voltage testers; they can miss voltage through shielding or armour and are not rated for verifying a zero-energy state. A contact tester rated for the voltage and installation category is required.
C. A blown fuse, an open pole or a single-phase backfeed can leave one phase energized while another reads zero. All conductors must be tested, including to ground.
D. A handle position and a tag prove intent, not absence of voltage. Breakers can fail with contacts closed, and circuits can be backfed from another source. Testing at the point of work is the only proof.

An electrician is installing lighting from the basket of an articulating boom lift. What personal fall protection is required while the platform is in use?
- A full-body harness tied to the platform's anchor at all times.
- None, because the platform has guardrails on all four sides.
- A body belt clipped to the boom structure, not the platform.
- A harness only when the boom is raised above 3 m.
Show the answer
A. Correct. Boom-type platforms can whip and catapult an occupant over the guardrail when the boom bounces, so a harness tied to the platform anchor is required whenever the worker is aboard, per the manufacturer and provincial OH&S regulation.
Why not the others
B. Guardrails alone are generally accepted on scissor lifts, but boom lifts are treated differently because of the catapult effect. The manufacturer's instructions and provincial regulation require tie-off in a boom.
C. Body belts are not permitted for fall arrest, and tying to the boom instead of the platform anchor puts the anchor point outside the platform. The designated platform anchor is the only approved point.
D. The tie-off requirement applies whenever the worker is in the platform, not above a threshold height. Ejection can occur during travel at low height when the boom hits an obstruction.

An electrician is planning to replace the main distribution panel in an occupied medical clinic. Which item must be settled first in the plan?
- Pulling all new feeder conductors before the shutdown so only terminations remain.
- The shutdown window with the client and utility, and temporary supply for critical loads.
- Ordering the new panel so it arrives before the drawings are finalized.
- Assigning the largest crew available to shorten the job.
Show the answer
B. Correct. The RSOS lists shutdown and installation sequencing as the planning requirement. In an occupied facility the outage window, utility disconnection and temporary supply for critical loads drive everything else: the permit timing, the crew, the pre-fabrication and the material delivery all follow from it.
Why not the others
A. Pre-work can be part of the plan, but it cannot be decided before the shutdown strategy is known: the new feeders cannot be routed until the temporary supply and the outage sequence are settled.
C. Ordering ahead of a finished design risks the wrong equipment. Material is ordered against the approved drawings and delivered to suit the sequence, not the reverse.
D. Crew size is set by the sequence and the outage window, not chosen first. More people in a small electrical room does not shorten a job that is limited by the outage.

During commissioning, an insulation-resistance test on a 575 V motor gives 500 MΩ from phase A to ground, 480 MΩ from phase B to ground, and 0.2 MΩ from phase C to ground. What is the correct conclusion?
- Phase C insulation is faulty; the motor is not energized until the fault is found and corrected.
- The motor is fine but the cable to phase C should be replaced.
- All readings are acceptable because each is above zero.
- The tester was set to the wrong voltage for phase C; retest at a higher voltage.
Show the answer
A. Correct. Two phases read in the hundreds of megohms and one reads a fraction of a megohm: that phase has an insulation breakdown or a wet/contaminated path to ground. Energizing it would produce a ground fault. The test and the readings are recorded as commissioning documentation.
Why not the others
B. The test cannot distinguish motor from cable until they are separated. The next step is to disconnect at the motor terminal box and test each part individually, not to assume the cable.
C. Insulation resistance must be in the megohm range consistent with the motor's voltage and the other phases; 0.2 MΩ is a failing value, especially against 500 MΩ on its neighbours.
D. All three phases are tested at the same voltage with the same instrument; a low reading on one phase is a winding result, not a tester setting. A higher test voltage on a faulty winding could damage it further.

03What block A covers
This block covers the skills every electrical job relies on. It includes arc-flash PPE and lock-out, meters and their CAT ratings, ladders, lifts and fall protection, rigging and sling angles, reading drawings and specifications, strut supports, anchors and seismic restraint, startup and commissioning checks such as phase rotation and insulation resistance, and mentoring apprentices.
The Red Seal Occupational Standard names this block “Performs common occupational skills”. It carries 11% of the exam, about 11 of the 100 questions, split across six tasks. The share column is each task's weight within the block, as the standard publishes it.
| Task and its sub-tasks | Share of block |
|---|---|

04What the questions turn on
Live-dead-live testing
After lock-out, prove the tester on a known live source, test every conductor to each other and to ground, then prove the tester again. If the tester fails that last check, the zero readings prove nothing and the circuit is treated as live.
Meter category and arc-flash PPE
Measurement category follows the transient energy available. The line side of a service disconnect is a CAT IV location, so a CAT III 600 V meter is not rated for it. Arc-rated clothing must meet or exceed the labelled incident energy.
Sling angles add tension
Tension in each sling leg is the load shared by the legs divided by the sine of the angle from horizontal. At 30 degrees, each leg of a two-leg sling carries the full weight of the load, which is why shallow angles are avoided.
Rotation and phase sequence
Bump a new motor uncoupled to confirm rotation before it drives a pump, and check phase sequence before tying a new feeder to a bus that feeds motors. On a VFD-fed motor, reverse rotation on the drive output or in its parameters.
