Five free practice questions on frames, cabs and attachments: block H of the Red Seal 421A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician exam, about 9 of its 135 questions. They are in the exam's format: four options, one correct answer. Answer each one before opening the explanation. No account, no email.
01The questions
-
A grapple attachment closes far slower than its specification. Where should diagnosis begin?
- Replacing the grapple's hoses on speculation.
- Repainting the grapple to check for cracks.
- Measuring the auxiliary circuit's flow and pressure.
- Disassembling the grapple's cylinders immediately.
Show the answer
C. Correct. Attachment performance complaints split at the coupler: is the carrier delivering spec flow/pressure, or is the attachment consuming it badly? Measuring supply first — flow meter and gauge against the attachment's requirements — assigns the fault to carrier or attachment before any teardown.
Why not the others
A. Hoses are one possibility inside a diagnosis the measurements have not yet localized. Quantify supply first.
B. Paint stripping for crack checks is a structural technique unrelated to speed. The hydraulic measurements answer the complaint.
D. Tearing down the attachment before measuring supply risks rebuilding a healthy component while a carrier valve or setting was the real fault. Measure first.

During service, the technician finds a machine's secondary (emergency) exit latch seized shut with corrosion. How must this finding be treated?
- As acceptable as long as the main door works.
- A safety defect to correct before release.
- As a note for the next scheduled overhaul.
- As the operator's problem to lubricate weekly.
Show the answer
B. Correct. The emergency exit exists for the day the primary door is blocked — in a rollover or fire. A seized exit is a life-safety defect: free/repair or replace the latch, verify smooth operation from inside, and check the exit's seals and signage. It does not wait for a convenient time.
Why not the others
A. The secondary exit exists precisely for when the main door cannot be used. Both must function.
C. Deferring a disabled emergency exit gambles the operator's escape route. Safety-critical defects are corrected now.
D. Assigning a found defect back to the operator is not a repair. The technician corrects and verifies it.
-
On a frame inspection, the technician finds a hairline in the paint at a gusset weld with a faint rust streak bleeding from it. What should this finding be treated as?
- Normal appearance for any working machine.
- Cosmetic paint failure to be touched up.
- A warranty issue only if the machine is new.
- A suspected structural crack to confirm.
Show the answer
D. Correct. A broken paint line weeping rust at a weld toe is the classic early presentation of a fatigue crack — the paint fails over the moving crack and moisture rusts inside it. Clean and confirm (dye penetrant or other NDT), then assess repair per the OEM's structural procedure before the crack grows critical.
Why not the others
A. Dirt and chips are normal; a cracked paint line bleeding rust at a stress point is a finding. It gets investigated, not normalized.
B. Painting over a fatigue crack hides it while it grows. The rust streak from within is the tell that this is structural, not cosmetic.
C. Warranty status changes who pays, not what the finding is. The crack gets confirmed and addressed regardless of the machine's age.

While repairing a bucket linkage, the technician replaces worn pins and bushings. Which practices apply?
- Measure bores, press bushings correctly, fit specified pins.
- Install the new parts in the old worn bores as-is.
- Weld the pins to the bosses so they cannot move.
- Leave the grease fittings out to keep dirt from entering.
Show the answer
A. Correct. Bores are measured — wallowed bores need line boring or welding/machining per procedure, not just new parts. Bushings press in with correct tooling and orientation (grease grooves aligned), pins match specification, retention hardware is renewed and torqued, and the joint is greased until purging on completion.
Why not the others
B. New pins in egg-shaped bores wear out immediately. Measurement decides whether the bores themselves need restoration first.
C. Pins retained by welding cannot be serviced and the heat damages parts. Designed retention hardware does the job.
D. Grease purging is what keeps dirt OUT of the joint. Fittings are installed and the joint lubricated to purge.
-
A cracked cab side window must be replaced. What governs the replacement glass and its installation?
- Leaving the opening empty for airflow in summer.
- Acrylic sheet siliconed over the old frame.
- Any household glass cut to size.
- OEM glazing, installed with the specified sealing.
Show the answer
D. Correct. Cab glazing is specified — safety glass or polycarbonate of the designed type, including tint where fitted for sunlight filtration (the RSOS notes eye strain from wrong sun-filtration components). Installation follows the seal/bonding procedure so the glass retains its strength and the cab keeps its sealing.
Why not the others
A. An open cab loses pressurization, noise protection and FOPS-related integrity. The glazing is replaced properly.
B. Improvised glazing fails structurally and optically and ruins sealing. The OEM glazing and method are the repair.
C. Ordinary glass shatters dangerously and lacks the specified strength. Only the specified safety glazing belongs in a cab.

03What block H covers
This block covers the machine's structure, operator station and attachments. It includes frame crack inspection and welded repairs, ROPS and FOPS, articulation joints and swing bearings, seat belts, cab seals, glass and emergency exits, mirrors and cameras, bucket teeth and cutting edges, quick couplers, hydraulic hammers and grapples, pins and bushings, and installing new attachments.
The Red Seal Occupational Standard names this block “Services, diagnoses and repairs structural components, operator stations, attachments and accessories”. It carries 6.7% of the exam, about 9 of the 135 questions, split across three tasks. The share column is each task's weight within the block, as the standard publishes it.
| Task and its sub-tasks | Share of block |
|---|---|
| Services, diagnoses and repairs structural components Services structural components; Diagnoses structural components; Performs mechanical repairs on structural components | 27% |
| Services, diagnoses and repairs operator station components Services operator station components; Diagnoses operator station components; Repairs operator station components | 35% |
| Services, diagnoses and repairs attachments and accessories Services attachments and accessories; Diagnoses attachments and accessories; Repairs attachments and accessories; Installs attachments and accessories | 38% |
04What the questions turn on
Finding frame cracks
Wash the frame before inspecting, then look closely at weld toes, gussets and previous repairs. A paint line weeping rust at a weld is a suspected fatigue crack: confirm it with dye penetrant, then repair it by the OEM procedure.
ROPS and FOPS stay unmodified
Never drill, weld, heat or straighten a ROPS or FOPS, because any of these voids its certification. Damage is repaired, or the structure replaced, strictly by the manufacturer's certified procedure.
Check the carrier's supply first
When a hammer or grapple underperforms, measure the carrier's auxiliary flow and pressure against the attachment's specification before any teardown. With a hammer's nitrogen charge correct, a starved supply is the next suspect.
Wear parts protect the base
Replace bucket teeth before wear reaches the adapters, and turn a reversible cutting edge before wear enters the moldboard. Torque the plow bolts to specification and re-check them after initial work.
