Question mix — weighted to the blueprint
Fewer than one question in ten asks you to name a part. The rest asks you to follow a procedure or diagnose a fault and reason to its cause — which makes 310T the most diagnosis-heavy exam on this site, and exactly where recall-only question banks leave you exposed.
What the 310T covers
Eleven major work activities.
The occupational standard groups the trade into eleven major work activities and 127 sub-tasks. The question counts below are the official blueprint weightings — our 550-question bank is built to that same map, with every sub-task covered.
- A
Common occupational skills · 8 questions
Safety-related functions, tools and equipment, routine work practices, and communication and mentoring.
- B
Engines and supporting systems · 21 questions
Base engines, lubrication, intake and exhaust, aftertreatment, engine management, fuel delivery, engine retarders and cooling.
- C
Air systems and brake systems · 17 questions
Air supply and treatment, foundation brakes, air and hydraulic brake systems, and anti-lock and stability systems.
- D
Electrical and electronic systems · 22 questions
Batteries, charging, starting and spark ignition, electrical accessories, and vehicle management systems and networks.
- E
Drive trains · 17 questions
Clutches, manual, automatic and automated transmissions, transfer cases, drivelines, drive axles and drive train retarders.
- F
Steering, chassis, suspension, tires and wheels · 18 questions
Steering systems, chassis and frames, suspensions, hitches and couplers, and tires, wheels and hubs.

Cabs · 5 questions
Interior and exterior cab components — seats, controls, glass, mirrors, cab mounts and cab suspension.
- H
Trailers · 8 questions
Trailer components and accessories, plus trailer heating and refrigeration units.
- I
Climate control systems · 7 questions
Cab heating and ventilation, auxiliary heaters, and air conditioning service and diagnosis.
- J
Hydraulic systems · 8 questions
Pumps, valves, cylinders and motors, hoses and fittings, fluid condition and contamination.
- K
Hybrid and electric vehicles · 4 questions
High-voltage safety and lock-out, hybrid architectures, and electric drive and charging systems.
Where our numbers come from
Air brake specs, checked against the standard.
Air system figures are where practice banks quietly go wrong, because most of them are jurisdiction- or manufacturer-dependent and there is no single number to memorize. Every air, brake, steering, suspension, coupling and wheel specification in our 310T bank was checked against the CCMTA National Safety Code Standard 11 — the Canadian periodic inspection standard — and the clause recorded question by question. Where a value is genuinely set by the manufacturer, the question tests the relationship instead of inventing a figure. Pushrod stroke limits always name both the chamber type and the size, because that is how the standard states them. The question counts above are the Red Seal Program's own exam breakdown for Truck and Transport Mechanic, and every question is mapped to a sub-task of the Red Seal Occupational Standard. For what each block covers and where to spend your study time, read the 310T exam guide. Read how our questions are made.

Try three from the bank
Three 310T practice questions, answers included.
Three questions from three different work activities — one recall, one procedural, one critical-thinking, the way the exam is built. Pick an answer, then open the explanation. Every question in the bank explains all four options, not just the right one.
-
A driver complains that the fifth wheel on a tractor is hard to unlock and the release handle has to be forced. The jaws are clean and adjusted correctly. What should the technician check?
- The lock's springs and linkage.
- The trailer's landing gear.
- The tractor's air pressure.
- The trailer's brake adjustment.
Show the answer
A. Correct. Difficulty opening or closing is a listed hitch symptom, and when the jaws are adjusted correctly the cause lies in the release mechanism: broken or weak springs, a bent or seized release handle and linkage, worn pivot bushings, or a damaged lock plunger. The RSOS lists bushings, jaws, slide rail locks and clevis pin among the components and requires hitch operation to be tested; the mechanism is repaired with the manufacturer's rebuild kit.
-
After rebuilding a trailer's landing gear gearbox, how does the RSOS require the repair to be verified?
- Spin the crank once by hand.
- Load test on the trailer.
- Check the ABS warning lamp.
- Send a gearbox oil sample.
Show the answer
B. Correct. The RSOS lists road testing, load testing and sensory observations as the methods for verifying trailer repairs, and gear box among the components rebuilt. The landing gear is cranked through its full travel in both speeds to confirm smooth operation, then the trailer is dropped on the gear with a representative load to confirm it holds without creeping or noise; the gearbox is checked for leaks and the cross tube for straightness. The repair and verification are documented.
-
The RSOS lists 'alternative auxiliary heaters' as an emerging technology in cab heating. What are they and why do fleets adopt them?
- Heaters powered by the trailer's reefer unit.
- Heaters that use refrigerant instead of coolant.
- Heaters that warm the cab without idling.
- Heaters that only work while driving.
Show the answer
C. Correct. Auxiliary heaters, such as diesel-fired coolant or cab-air heaters, electric heaters run from shore power or an auxiliary power unit, and newer alternatives, provide cab and engine heat with the main engine off, cutting idling fuel, emissions and engine wear; the RSOS lists alternative auxiliary heaters among emerging heating technologies and auxiliary heaters among components repaired. Fleets adopt them for idle-reduction rules and fuel savings; the technician services their fuel supply, burner, pump and controls per the manufacturer.

Why practice scores mislead
You can ace recall and still fail the 310T.
Most question banks drill what you can recall, because recall questions are cheap to write. The 310T is the opposite — under 10% recall, and the rest procedural and critical-thinking questions that ask you to work a fault through to a cause. That gap is why people walk in confident and walk out surprised. TicketPrep weights every test to the published blueprint, so a 78 here means 78 there — and a weak section here is a weak section there.
