Millwright practice banks quietly go wrong in two ways: a fit, clearance or torque that belongs to one manufacturer presented as a universal number, and formulas tested as memory when the exam hands you a formula sheet. Every question in our 433A bank is anchored to a sub-task of the occupational standard and verified against it, with all four options explained. The formula sheet and acronym list are provided at the exam sitting, so our rigging, sling-load and hydraulic-force questions are written to be worked from that sheet, and we never test recall of the formulas themselves. Where a value is genuinely set by the manufacturer, the question tests the method and the relationship instead of inventing a figure. A palletizing robot in a food plant has begun placing cases 3 to 4 mm (about 1/8 in) off position, and the error grows through the shift. The wrist axis makes a grinding noise when it rotates. With power off and the brake released, a dial indicator on the arm shows 0.5 mm (0.020 in) of lost motion when the wrist is reversed by hand. The servo motor runs cool and the controller logs no encoder faults. What is the most likely cause?
- The servo motor encoder is losing counts.
- A worn zero-backlash reducer on the wrist axis.
- Loose anchor bolts on the robot base.
- The wrong payload setting in the program.

B. Correct. Lost motion measured mechanically with the drive off is backlash, and a robot joint reducer (harmonic or cycloidal type) is designed to have essentially none. Grinding noise plus growing positional drift points to worn gear elements or a failing reducer bearing. The RSOS lists inspecting and repairing zero-backlash devices as a millwright repair task; the reducer is replaced and the axis re-mastered afterwards.

B. Correct. Volume = 2.0 m × 1.0 m × 0.025 m = 0.05 m³. Mass = 0.05 m³ × 7 849 kg/m³ = 392 kg. The sheet's constant assumes all three dimensions are converted to metres before multiplying. Round the working mass up, and add rigging hardware before comparing it with the hoist rating.

A four-pole three-phase induction motor is installed on a 60 Hz supply at a pulp mill. What is its synchronous speed?
- 900 rpm
- 1200 rpm
- 1800 rpm

C. Correct. Synchronous speed = 120 × frequency ÷ number of poles = 120 × 60 ÷ 4 = 1 800 rpm. The rotor of an induction motor turns slightly slower than this (slip), which is why the nameplate typically reads 1 750 to 1 780 rpm.

Why practice scores mislead
You can ace recall and still fail the 433A.
Most question banks drill what you can recall, because recall questions are cheap to write. On the 433A that gets you further than on most trades — 30 to 40 percent of the exam is recall — but it still leaves 60 to 70 percent of the paper: procedural questions that ask you to work a sling load, set a bearing fit or align a shaft, and critical-thinking questions that ask you to reason from a vibration reading or a pump symptom to its cause.
