Where are the nails placed on a standard three-tab asphalt strip shingle, and how many are used in a normal-wind area?
- Two nails per strip, in the headlap above the sealant strip
- Six nails per strip, staples acceptable, driven until the head is recessed
- Four nails per strip through the tabs, so they are sealed by the next course
- Four nails per strip, just below the sealant strip and above the cutouts, driven flush

The nail line is about 140 to 150 mm (5-1/2 to 6 in.) above the butt: below the sealant strip and 25 mm (1 in.) above the top of the cutouts, one nail near each end and one above each cutout. Each nail then also holds the top of the course below. Nails are driven flush, not overdriven, and must penetrate the sheathing or go through it; six nails are used in high-wind areas.

An unused brick chimney that passes through the main floor, second floor and roof of a house is to be completely removed. What is the correct procedure?
- Cut it off just below the roof, roof over the hole and leave the rest
- Knock the upper section over into the attic and haul the pieces out
- Top down brick by brick, chuting debris, headering each opening as you pass
- Pull it down from outside with a cable and a truck

C. Correct. A chimney is freestanding and is taken down in the reverse of how it was built: from the cap downward, a course at a time, with the masonry chuted or bucketed out rather than dropped. As the work passes each level, the framing that was trimmed around the chimney is headered off with doubled members in hangers, and the roof hole is sheathed and roofed. Shore any floor framing that was resting on the chimney before the brick that supported it is removed.

A wall-mounted handrail on a stair must be graspable for its full length. What minimum clearance does the NBC require between the handrail and the wall?

B. Correct. NBC Part 9 requires at least 50 mm clearance between a handrail and the wall or any other surface behind it so the rail can be gripped along its length. Standard handrail brackets provide this when the rail is mounted on them; check if a thick profile or a tiled wall reduces it.
