The 310S exam at a glance
What you're walking into.
Question mix — weighted to the blueprint
Only a small slice of the 310S exam asks you to name a part. The rest asks you to diagnose a fault, follow a procedure, and reason to a cause — which is exactly where recall-only question banks leave you exposed.
What the 310S covers
Eight major work activities.
The occupational standard groups the trade into eight major work activities, 23 tasks and 96 sub-tasks. The question counts below are the official blueprint weightings — our 550-question bank is built to that same map, with every sub-task covered.
- A
Common occupational skills · 9 questions
Safety-related functions, tools, equipment and service documentation, communication and mentoring.
- B
Engine and engine support systems · 22 questions
Diagnosing and repairing engine mechanical systems and the support systems for gasoline and diesel engines: fuel, ignition, air induction, exhaust, emissions, cooling and lubrication.
- C
Vehicle module communications systems · 12 questions
Diagnosing and repairing vehicle networking: modules, bus systems, scan-tool and network diagnosis.
- D
Driveline systems · 17 questions
Clutches, manual and automatic transmissions, transfer cases, drive axles and driveline diagnosis and repair.
- E
Electrical and comfort control systems · 23 questions
Batteries, charging and starting, wiring and body electrical, plus HVAC and comfort control diagnosis and repair.
- F
Steering, suspension, braking, control systems, tires, hubs and wheel bearings · 23 questions
Steering, suspension and alignment, hydraulic and electronic brakes, ABS and control systems, tires, wheels, hubs and bearings.
- G
Restraint systems, body, accessories and trim · 10 questions
Airbags and seat belts, body components, accessories and trim diagnosis and repair.
- H
Hybrid and electric vehicle systems · 9 questions
High-voltage safety, hybrid drivetrains and EV diagnosis and repair — a small block today and a growing one.
Where our numbers come from
Built to the published standard.
The question counts above are the Red Seal Program's own exam breakdown for Automotive Service Technician, and every question in our 550-question bank is mapped to a sub-task of the Red Seal Occupational Standard — 23 tasks and 96 sub-tasks, each one covered. When the standard is revised, we re-check the map and the weightings against it. For what each block covers and where to spend your study time, read the 310S exam guide. Try three from the bank
Three 310S practice questions, answers included.
Three questions from three different work activities — one recall, one procedural, one critical-thinking, the way the exam is built. Pick an answer, then open the explanation. Every question in the bank explains all four options, not just the right one.
-
The driver's power mirror moves up and down but not left and right. The passenger mirror works in all four directions from the same switch. Which is the most likely fault?
- The fuse for the mirror circuit
- The left/right contact in the mirror control switch
- The horizontal motor in the driver's mirror or its wiring
- The shared ground for both mirror assemblies
Show the answer
C. Correct. The switch's left/right contacts are shared by both mirrors and they work the passenger side, so they are good; the driver-side select contacts are good because up/down works. What is left is the driver mirror's horizontal motor and the wire feeding it, so test for voltage at the mirror connector when left/right is pressed with the driver side selected.

A technician is about to remove the drums on an older vehicle to diagnose a rear brake noise. Which method should be used to deal with the brake dust inside?
- Wet the dust with brake cleaner or water and wipe, or use a HEPA vacuum enclosure
- Blow the dust out with the shop air gun before inspection
- Sweep the dust onto the floor with a brush
- Leave the dust in place; only the friction surfaces need cleaning
Show the answer
A. Correct. Airborne brake dust is a listed hazard for this task. Wet methods (aerosol brake cleaner or a water/detergent spray, then wipe and dispose of the rags properly) or a HEPA-filtered vacuum with an enclosure keep the dust out of the air. Follow the shop's WHMIS/OH&S procedures.

Why do hybrid and EV high voltage electric A/C compressors require the manufacturer's specified polyol ester (POE) oil rather than the PAG oil used in belt-driven compressors?
- POE oil is a much better electrical insulator
- POE oil is thinner and lubricates the scroll better at high speed
- PAG oil is incompatible with R-1234yf
- POE oil is cheaper and biodegradable
Show the answer
A. Correct. The compressor's HV motor windings sit in the refrigerant and oil, so the oil must not conduct. PAG oil is hygroscopic and electrically conductive enough to lower insulation resistance and trigger an isolation fault, and it can damage the compressor. Only the specified POE (or manufacturer-branded equivalent) may be used, in the specified quantity.

Why practice scores mislead
You can ace recall and still fail the 310S.
Most question banks drill what you can recall, because recall questions are cheap to write. The 310S is the opposite — mostly procedural and critical-thinking questions that ask you to work a fault through to a cause. That gap is why people walk in confident and walk out surprised. TicketPrep weights every test to the published blueprint, so a 78 here means 78 there — and a weak section here is a weak section there.
