Question mix — weighted to the blueprint

Recall 35–45%Procedural 45–55%Critical <10%

About half the paper asks you to carry out a procedure, 35 to 45 percent asks you to recall a fact, and fewer than one question in ten hands you a situation to diagnose. The procedural share is where recall-only question banks leave you exposed: the order a cold steam main is warmed up and drained, how a line is isolated and locked out, how a flange is bolted up, how a hydrostatic test is set up and read. Layout, fabrication and piping installation (29 questions) and heating, cooling and process piping systems (27) are the two heaviest blocks — 56 of the 130 questions between them.

The pass mark is 70 percent, which is 91 correct answers out of 130, and four hours works out to about 1 minute 51 seconds a question. A formula sheet and an acronym list are provided at the sitting. The exam is built on the 2022 Red Seal Occupational Standard for Steamfitter/Pipefitter. In Ontario, Steamfitter is a compulsory trade with a 9,000-hour apprenticeship; Alberta and British Columbia call the same trade Steamfitter-Pipefitter.

What the 307A covers

Seven major work activities.

The occupational standard groups the trade into 7 major work activities, 26 tasks and 107 sub-tasks, 104 of them common core. The question counts below are the official blueprint weightings — our 550-question bank is built to that same map, with every common-core sub-task covered. Three blocks carry most of the paper: layout, fabrication and piping installation (29), heating, cooling and process piping systems (27) and steam and condensate systems (24) add up to 80 of the 130 questions, while renewable energy systems, at 8, is the lightest.

  1. A

Common occupational skills · 16 questions

Safety-related functions: a safe work environment, PPE and safety equipment, and lock-out and tag-out. Using and maintaining common tools, access equipment, and welding, soldering, brazing, oxy-fuel and plasma cutting equipment. Organizing the job — planning work, generating and interpreting drawings, developing piping templates, quality control and handling materials — and communication and mentoring.

  2. B

Layout, fabrication and piping installation · 29 questions

Fabricating piping components and brackets, supports, hangers, guides and anchors; laying out and installing copper, plastic, carbon steel, stainless steel, fibreglass and specialty piping, tubing and fittings; installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing and testing valves; and steam and liquid-filled heat tracing — the heaviest block on the paper.

  3. C

Rigging, hoisting, lifting and positioning · 15 questions

Common lifts — determining the load, preparing the lift plan, selecting, inspecting and setting up the equipment, securing the lift area, making the lift, and maintaining and storing the gear — then complex and critical lifts, including the calculations behind them.

  4. D

Low and high pressure steam and condensate systems · 24 questions

Low pressure (10 questions) and high pressure (14 questions) steam and condensate systems: installing the equipment and the piping, testing the system, and maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing it.

  5. E

Heating, cooling and process piping systems · 27 questions

Eight systems, each installed, tested, maintained, troubleshot and repaired: hydronic, process piping, industrial water and waste treatment, hydraulic, HVACR, fuel, medical gas, and compressed air and pneumatic. Fire protection is in the standard but is not common core and carries no questions.

  6. F

Renewable energy systems · 8 questions

Geo-exchange and geothermal systems, solar heating systems and heat recovery systems — heat recovery carries half the block.

  7. G

    Commissioning, start-up and turnover · 11 questions

Preparing a system — flushing it, treating it chemically, pre-checking it and connecting the commissioning equipment — then commissioning it: securing the area, pressurizing and inspecting the system, correcting faulty conditions and taking part in start-up and turnover.

Where our numbers come from

Every question, anchored to the standard.

Pipefitter practice banks quietly go wrong in two ways: a figure that belongs to one code, one specification or one manufacturer — a test-pressure multiplier, a hanger spacing, a bolt torque — presented as the universal rule, and formulas tested as memory when the exam hands you a formula sheet. Every question in our 307A bank is anchored to a sub-task of the occupational standard and verified against it, with all four options explained. The formula sheet and acronym list are provided at the exam sitting — expansion L × ΔT × α, force P × A, Btuh = gpm × 500 × ΔT, 0.433 psi per foot of head, 1.414 for a 45° offset — so our calculation questions are worked from that sheet, in its imperial units with metric alongside, and we never test recall of the formulas themselves. Where a value is genuinely set by the code, the specification or the manufacturer, such as a hydrostatic test pressure or a hanger spacing, the question gives it in the stem instead of inventing a single right answer. Fire protection is not common core and carries no exam questions, so the bank does not test it. The question counts above are the Red Seal Program's own exam breakdown for Steamfitter/Pipefitter, and every question is mapped to a sub-task of the Red Seal Occupational Standard. The current exam and this bank follow the 2022 standard. For what each block covers and where to spend your study time, read the 307A Steamfitter exam guide. Read how our questions are made.

Try three from the bank

Three Steamfitter practice questions, answers included.

Three questions from three different work activities — one recall, one procedural, one critical-thinking, the way the exam is built. Pick an answer, then open the explanation. Every question in the bank explains all four options, not just the right one.

  1. Critical thinking · Low and high pressure steam and condensate systems

At a food plant, sections cut out of carbon steel condensate return show a smooth groove along the bottom of the pipe and thinning at the threads. Condensate pH is about 5.5, and boiler-water chemistry is within limits. What is the most likely cause?

    1. Carbonic acid from carbon dioxide in the steam
    2. Erosion by high-velocity flash steam
    3. Galvanic corrosion from copper upstream
    4. Dissolved-oxygen pitting
    Show the answer

    A. Correct. Carbon dioxide from bicarbonate in the make-up leaves with the steam and dissolves in the condensate as carbonic acid, lowering pH. It attacks where condensate runs, along the bottom of the pipe and at thin threads. Neutralizing amine and good deaeration and pretreatment are the fixes.

  2. Procedural · Rigging, hoisting, lifting and positioning

During a boiler-room replacement, an old horizontal receiver 4 ft (1.22 m) in diameter and 10 ft (3.05 m) long may still be full of water when it is lifted out. Using water at 62.4 lb/ft³ (1000 kg/m³) and π = 3.14, how much could the water alone weigh?

    1. 1046 lb (474 kg)
    2. 3919 lb (1777 kg)
    3. 7837 lb (3554 kg)
    4. 31350 lb (14218 kg)
    Show the answer

    C. Correct. V = πr²H = 3.14 × 2² × 10 = 125.6 ft³; weight = 125.6 × 62.4 = 7837 lb (3554 kg). Contents are part of the load: drain what you can, and if you cannot confirm the vessel is empty, plan for the full water weight plus the vessel and the rigging.

  3. Recall · Layout, fabrication and piping installation

A 2-inch branch must come off an existing 12-inch header in a refinery without cutting the header for a tee. Which fitting is welded onto the header over a hole cut in its wall?

    1. An olet (branch outlet fitting)
    2. A lateral with a 45° branch
    3. A bell-end reducing coupling
    4. A concentric swage nipple
    Show the answer

    A. Correct. An olet (weld, socket or threaded type) is contoured to the header, welded over a hole in the wall and reinforces the opening itself, so a small branch is added without a full-size tee. The hole is cut to the olet's bore, not to the branch OD.

Why practice scores mislead

You can ace recall and still fail the 307A.

Recall counts for more on the 307A than on any other trade on this site: 35 to 45 percent of the paper asks you to state a fact — a valve and what it is for, a fitting, a copper tube type, a kind of drawing. That is exactly why pipefitters over-trust recall drills. The other 45 to 55 percent is procedural, and it tests the order and the method behind the fact. Knowing what a drip leg is does not tell you how to bring a cold steam main up — slowly, with the drains open, before it sees full pressure. Knowing a line has to be locked out does not tell you the sequence: identify every energy source, isolate, lock and tag, relieve the stored pressure, then verify zero energy. Knowing a flange's torque value does not tell you to bolt it up in a star pattern, in stages. Knowing the test pressure does not tell you to read it on a gauge that puts it in the middle of its range. The formula sheet gives you the formulas and the constants, but not the fitting take-offs, the steam-table values, the sling-angle factors or the code limits — those you bring with you. That gap is why people walk in confident and walk out surprised. TicketPrep weights every test to the published blueprint, so a 78 here means 78 there — and a weak block here is a weak block there.

307A questions

Before you start.

How many questions are on the 307A Red Seal Steamfitter exam?
130 multiple-choice questions with a 4-hour writing time and a 70% pass mark — 91 correct answers — distributed across 7 major work activities. That is about 1 minute 51 seconds per question. Between 45 and 55 percent are procedural and application questions; 35 to 45 percent are knowledge and recall, and under 10 percent are critical thinking.
Is 307A the same as the Steamfitter/Pipefitter Red Seal exam?
Yes. The Red Seal trade is called Steamfitter/Pipefitter. Ontario certifies it as Steamfitter, trade code 307A, and issues the Certificate of Qualification through Skilled Trades Ontario when you pass the same interprovincial exam. Alberta and British Columbia call the trade Steamfitter-Pipefitter. Whichever name you see — steamfitter, pipefitter or both — it is one exam, built on the 2022 Red Seal Occupational Standard.
Is the 307A practice exam free?
Yes. You can try five free sample questions with no account. You see right or wrong as you go, and your email unlocks the written explanation for every option plus a one-page study guide. The full 550-question bank — 400 Standard plus 150 Advanced — and mock exams come with Exam Pass — a one-time $69 purchase for 120 days of access, not a subscription.
What does the 307A Steamfitter exam cover?
Common occupational skills (safety and lock-out, tools, access equipment, welding, brazing and cutting equipment, drawings, templates and quality control, communication and mentoring); layout, fabrication and installation of copper, plastic, carbon steel, stainless steel, fibreglass and specialty piping, plus valves and heat tracing; rigging, hoisting, lifting and positioning, including complex and critical lifts; low and high pressure steam and condensate systems; hydronic, process, industrial water and waste treatment, hydraulic, HVACR, fuel, medical gas, and compressed air and pneumatic piping systems; geo-exchange and geothermal, solar heating and heat recovery systems; and commissioning, start-up and turnover — 7 major work activities in all. Fire protection is in the standard but is not common core and carries no exam questions.
Is there a formula sheet on the Steamfitter exam?
Yes. The Red Seal Program provides a formula sheet and an acronym list at the exam sitting. The sheet is imperial: constants such as 1 ft² of steam EDR = 240 Btuh, 0.433 psi per foot of head and 1.414 for a 45° offset, a conversion table, expansion L × ΔT × α, force P × A, grade, pressure = height × density, Btuh = gpm × 500 × ΔT, and area and volume formulas. The acronym list covers terms such as AHJ, OS&Y, NFPA, WHMIS, SDS and PPE. The sheet does not give fitting take-offs, steam-table values, sling-angle factors or code limits, so those you still have to know. Our calculation questions are written to be worked from the sheet, so you practise choosing and applying the right formula the way the exam presents it.
Is steamfitter a compulsory trade in Ontario?
Yes. Steamfitter (307A) is a compulsory trade in Ontario: to work in it you must hold a Registered Training Agreement, a Provisional Certificate of Qualification or a Certificate of Qualification and appear on the Skilled Trades Ontario Public Register. The apprenticeship is 9,000 hours — 8,280 on the job and 720 in school — and the Certificate of Qualification must be renewed to stay valid.
Are these real 307A exam questions?
No. These are independent, Red Seal–style practice questions written for study, each mapped to the public occupational standard for the trade. Anyone selling "real exam questions" is breaking the Red Seal Program's terms — we don't do that.
